Are lead-acid discussions banned?

Postby Amberwolf » Sat Jun 06, 2009 7:34 am

I don't yet have any of the battery chemistries listed in the forum description, since due to lack of funds I have to use lead-acid chemistries. Is discussion of that type banned in the Battery Stuff forum, or just left out inadvertently?

well I use SLA, soon to be AGM and Ni-CD

Am going to do a 72V X 24Ah pack of AGM Bricks (12) 12V X 12Ah Bricks, should have the pack done by June 16.

Discovered AGM Bricks at $23.00 CAD each whereas the SLA are $55.00 CAD each and AGM do not need to get on a charger as quickly as SLA (they weigh a bit less) and have a longer useable life because they don't sulfate like SLA.

I was asked to be the North American Distributor for Headway Lifepo4, Li-Mn and SLA but had to decline the offer because I couldn't find a single person who wanted to earn a profit selling these packs. Really floored me how eager people are to live off Social Assistance and Unemployment and bitch about how bad the economy is instead of buying into a battery manufacturer for $1,200.00 CAD that would end up paying their rent in a year.

Well, in my case I work my butt off at the only parttime job I've been able to get in two years, to earn about $75 less than rent costs me. If it weren't for a sister also living here with me and contributing, plus oddjob work when I can find it, I couldn't live here at all. I am not on any assistance programs, but am going to have to apply for them soon, as I have yet to find anyone hiring more than part time, and those that would hire me part time want me to work whatever hours they decide to give me that week, which I am ALREADY doing at one place--one of the two places would have to be willing to wait each week till I got my schedule from the other so they could schedule me for whatever times I'm not already working, but none of them are. I make *slightly* better money at the place I am now than any of the others so far offered, and about the same hours for any of them (at most about 24 hours a week, over several days, often less than that).

My entire projects are done off donated or trashed items, otherwise I couldn't do the bikes, either. Even my batteries were donated well-used from a powerchair (presumably when they were replaced with new ones; but I don't know). When they die I'll be pedal-only again, until someone else donates some used batteries (unless I can use the few car batteries I've scavenged).

As far as buying into a business, I wouldn't have $1200 to spend on *anything*; I barely earn that much in two months! What little savings I ever had were gone long ago. I'm pretty sure anyone else in my situation that ends up *having* to go onto various assistance programs wouldn't have any money to spend on buying into a business either, but I don't know the people you're talking about, so maybe they're different.

what annoys me about this Recession (Depression) is that I have always charged people who I knew could afford to pay the full price for products and use the profit to lower the cost of the same products for people I knew could not afford to get into motor-assisted caycling. This Recession means there are so few people still out there who can pay the full price that I am tempted to stay in bed till 2010 when hopefully Obama stops throwing money at the Rich and starts taking care of the poor and middle class.

People are more inclinded in this Economy to do as you are doing re: build what they can using scavenged parts and that is good on one hand and awful on the other hand because bike shops are going tits up. The 2001 Recession saw 5,300 bike shops in the USA go bankrupt and this Recession will likely kill off the rest who stayed solvent after 2001. We'll end up with only Sears and Wal Mart selling bikes at this rate.

can anyone tell me the manufacturers requirement for CCA's on a 2nd gen with only one battery.

(I've been getting away with 360 CCA's from a battery taken of another car for six mths now but its time to save myself from a non-start which is coming soon)

Lucky posted 700+ was needed recently but thats a big battery and would be too big for my little battery tray.

I tried running SLAs, but I have better things to do with a trailer.

So I'm going Li-poly - 2 x 2 array of 8-cell packs, giving me 59.2 volts and 11.6 amps in a pack weighing about 12 lbs. With a rating of 25C I can max out most controllers and the battery pack won't break a sweat. Am working out the package to put them in right now...
